TCXOs and VCTCXOs
Standard clock oscillators can be produced to within ±15ppm over the temperature range 0° to +70°C, the limit being due to frequency drift with ambient temperature variation. To improve stability, a temperature compensation network can be incorporated into the oscillator circuit. The compensation network employs the negative temperature coefficient of thermistors. An oscillator so configured can exhibit stabilities in the order of 0.1ppm to 3ppm over a wide temperature range. This type of oscillator is known as a Temperature-Compensated Crystal Oscillator (TCXO). A version of this oscillator with a variable frequency output controlled by an external voltage is known as a Voltage Controlled Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator (VCTCXO).
